Sean's Story
In September 2019, someone prayed for me and saw an image of me carrying the flag at the front of a battle as a standard-bearer against the powers of darkness. They said that they saw the army retreating, but that as I pressed forward, the army returned to fight and won victory. That prayer stuck with me on a deep level until January 2022 when I discerned to start Warriors of St. Michael men's ministry. Even then, I felt as if God had something more in store that he would reveal in time.
It was in May of 2023 when I was asked to speak at a women's conference the following May 4, 2024. I was able to pick my own topic, so I chose St. Joan of Arc. One minor problem with that was that I knew almost nothing about her! All I knew was that St. Michael the Archangel had appeared to her, and that was intriguing enough to do the research. At that time, I started reading the book Joan of Arc: By Herself and Her Witnesses by Régine Pernoud. I read a section about the Siege of Orléans which described the French army retreating from the English until Joan picked up her standard and waved it on the frontlines. She rallied the troops, and they were able to achieve victory that day. When I read that, I had to put the book down and marvel at how the prayer I had received nearly four years prior was so similar to this event in Joan's life.
As I continued to dive into Joan's story, it was like the words leapt off the page. It began a stirring in my heart that I was called to spread devotion to St. Joan of Arc, and to use her life as a deep well for contemplation of the life of every disciple of the Lord. I also became captivated by the devotion that St. Thérèse of Lisieux had to St. Joan of Arc. I was at the beginning of diving into these reflections when I met Elizabeth Gengle. She came into Ave Maria Radio studios to record Heart of the Interior Life, and she shared with me her own devotion to these amazing saints. Once she reflected more on these themes, she thought we had the beginnings of an incredible women's retreat. The Thérèse and Joan retreat is my humble attempt to respond to the calling to spread devotion to these two 'contemplative warrior' saints, and I pray that it helps you to follow God's will in your life and to say with Joan, "I am not afraid. For God is with me. I was born to do this!"
